100 million searches per day



DuckDuckGo celebrates an important stage as it reaches 100 million searches in one day.

DuckDuckGo’s public traffic data shows that the record was set last Monday, January 11th.

DuckDuckGo set a new record: 100 million searches a day

Including the number of important events on Monday, DuckDuckGo is on track to reach about 90 million average daily searches for the month of January.

By comparison, DuckDuckGo averaged about 52 million searches per day in January 2020. This means that data for this month represents an increase of 73% over the previous year.

To further put this record growth in perspective, here are the increases in average daily demand for the previous year:

  • January 2019 to January 2020 – 52% increase
  • January 2018 to January 2019 – 62% increase
  • January 2017 to January 2018 – 61% increase
  • January 2016 to January 2017 – 30% increase

DuckDuckGo’s growth is not limited to web search, as its mobile application is more popular than ever.

Last week it peaked at # 7 on the iOS App Store charts for all free apps and # 1 of all apps.

That’s right, DuckDuckGo is officially the №2 mobile search engine in the United States. On the desktop, it lags behind Bing and Yahoo in position # 4. However, there is less room for a search engine to grow on desktops as more searches are performed on mobile devices.

The key point for selling DuckDuckGo to other search engines is its privacy features. Users can search without their personal information being collected and sold to advertisers.

Recent events have led to the adoption of privacy-based applications. As DuckDuckGo rises in the App Store, so do applications for encrypted messages such as Signal and Telegram.

At the time of this writing, Signal and Telegram are №1 and №2 in the US App Store, respectively.

As people become more aware of how companies use their data, they seem to make conscious decisions to choose different services.

Antitrust investigations by companies such as Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google have brought their privacy policies to the fore. As a result, people become aware of what they are signing up for in big technology when they agree to their terms of use.

Alternative search engines, social media applications and messaging applications are increasing. Whether this growth is sustainable is something we will find out over time. Consumers may find greater satisfaction with the services they originally used.

As for DuckDuckGo, its growth is stable enough to suggest that it will continue that way. As I demonstrated earlier, DuckDuckGo’s journey to 100 million searches a day takes years. It’s not something that happened overnight.

Now would be a great time for DuckDuckGo to invest in more features that bring it closer to a real 1: 1 alternative to other search engines. We will see if this growth in daily searches will stimulate some updates in the near future.
