2 children in Boston infected with meningococcal disease

Two young children in Boston have been diagnosed with meningococcal disease, which is infectious and can lead to meningitis, a bacterial infection of the brain and spinal cord, officials said Wednesday.

"Both cases relate to day care centers specializing in the care of children who have survived homelessness, but it is currently unknown whether the two cases are related," Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Public Health Commission said in a statement.

All people known to have been in close contact with children were given antibiotics to reduce their risk of infection, officials said. The last day one of the children was at one of the day care centers was Friday .
