GMC marketing people love to draw comparisons of new 500 models between 500 models of 500 models, the new Ultra Passable Upholstery, and the rugged Ram 2500's powerful combo. But it's not really a fair comparison, as the two trucks are very different in their approach to off-road tasks. Ram's main function is to be the best off-road HD pickup truck, featuring manually lockable front and rear axles, electronic rotary disconnectors, super low crawl ratio, 1
Connected: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 First Drive: Getting Easy
We drove the new 2020 Sierra 2500 AT4 to a media launch event in Jackson Hole, Wyo, where we were able to put the new truck through some of its paces and off the sidewalk. (According to our ethics policy, PickupTrucks.com pays for its own lodging and airfare at similar events sponsored by the manufacturer.) And while the 2500 AT4 is not a free mountain goat like the Power Wagon, its ability to pull and pull with ease is in different light from that truck.
What you get with the HD AT4
The first and most obvious visual difference between the AT4 and the GMC Sierra 2500 Denali fan is the deliberate lack of brightness of the truck. it is cast in favor of body-colored or blackened pieces, and the resulting look is modern, frightening and distinctive, especially in darker colors such as red or black. AT4 also carries some ability. There are Rancho shock ab sorbers, extra sliding plates and rear differential with Eaton automatic lock; the same bits as the X31 off-road package that is available on non-AT4. You can also get the new Sierra HD four-wheel drive, which can be selectively locked or left automatically, which also has a low range. It rides on 18-inch all-terrain Michelin tires with 20-inch models as an option. What is no different with a truck are the optional locking differentials that give the Ram Power Wagon an advantage in certain off-road situations.
Powerful Power Engines
Duramax 2000 / Duramax 2000> Duramax has a clear advantage over the Power Wagon in the power engine department. While the powerful 6.4 liter Power Wagon Hemi V-8 petrol engine and eight-speed transmission is a dynamic combo, with plenty of power for almost every situation, it has outpaced the latest GMC 6.6-liter V-8 gasoline producing less horsepower (401 versus 410 on Ram) but much more torque (464 lb-ft versus 429 on Ram). You only get six-speed automatic with GMC Gas Engine; Power Wagon upgraded to eight-speed f or 2020. But if you're looking for the best torque, you'll want to go the GMC route and choose the revised 6.6-liter turbo-diesel 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 connected with the all-new 10-speed Allison heavy-duty transmission. The diesel has 445 hp. and a torque of 1010 pounds, more than twice than what you can get in a non-diesel Power Wagon. We do not know how this will compare with the new 2020 Ford Stroke V-8 engine, as Ford continues to avoid sharing any power or torque numbers for its newest truck.
I tried the new 6.6-liter V-8 gasoline on a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and found it to be an exceptional engine. The Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel is just as fantastic, but your Sierra 2500 AT4 may actually be overkill, unless you plan to tow regularly, which, according to GMC customer surveys, you probably do. My first drive consisted of a new 2500 AT4 crew cab with 2000 kilograms of logs clamped in bed, while this kind of rear weight affected the handling a little, it seemed, there was not much squatting in the rear, and overall steering remained stable and true rather than light and flying. Of course, 2000 pounds is still much less than the maximum payload of a Sierra 2500 crew cab of 3597 pounds when equipped with a diesel engine (3,862 when going gas), but that is also not the maximum level of AT4, given the added weight of its off-road components (which would be 3,615 pounds per GMC).
Off-road truck but not very far off-road
I briefly took an AT4 off-road, but the course was nothing challenging, just two follow-ups over several flights. However, on these unfolded surfaces, the suspension of the AT4 perfectly gripped the rough terrain and maintained a level of comfort and control in the cabin, which worked well. It feels more civilized than the Power Wagon, leaner and less sturdy, but it was also a function of the significant payload in the back. I've done things in the Power Wagon that I wouldn't consider doing in the AT4, given the lack of manual control for the differentials and the rotating rods. So for lighter off-road loads, the AT4 looks well suited.
But towing is where GMC believes the AT4 is lit, and that's correct I guess. My run was towing a trailer with a box of 12,000 pounds over 55 miles on the high side of Wyoming, and the big 2500 didn't jump. You will notice the weight in the longer stopping distances, but I never felt like the trailer was pushing the truck around or that it had been unjustified by its presence. The acceleration, even up to 4-5%, was intrinsic and impressive, and the higher and softer off-road suspension of the AT4 didn't seem at all distracted by the trailer. The truck felt flat, balanced and easily carried such a load. The maximum Sier single rear wheel Pa 2500 crew cab can tow 18,500 pounds with diesel or 14,500 pounds with gas engine. With an eraser / fifth wheel, the 2500 notebook can draw 18,500 pounds with diesel or 16,700 pounds with gas engine. If you upgrade to a 3500 AT4 rear wheel cabin, you can get 20,000 pounds off the bumper with diesel or 14,500 pounds with the gas engine. Goosenecks and fifth wheels improve those numbers by 3500, allowing the AT4 to make 16,500 pounds for the gas engine and reach 21,300 pounds for the diesel. To maximize your towing capacity, you need a standard dual rear-wheel-drive diesel model that will bring you that top speed of 35,500 pounds, but the AT4 is not available in dual-rear configuration, nor do you really want it such an off-road setting.
Where the Sierra HD AT4 really shines is in this sweet spot for customers who want a decent truck that is capable of being on the road but still see the car's core function as a towing platform. He fulfills this role with admiration, enhanced by the class-leading ProGrade Trailering Camera System, which, with the addition of additional cameras, can bring 15 different camera views into the cab to help the driver see the entire vehicle when towing . It even stitches camera views together to make the trailer invisible. The AT4 Power Wagon is the more accurate off-road focus and will probably continue to be the choice in this class until we get to the 2020 Ford Super Duty F-250 Tremor to see how it compares.
I'm almost tired of repeating the same complaints about the latest GM trucks at every review, but they are constantly the same problem. As much as trucks are in terms of capacity, they lag behind the competition for quality and refinement of the interior. The AT4 gets some unique brown brown accents in its otherwise-tested monochrome black cockpit, but still can't hold a candle to the Ram's interior, but it's not just the choice or the materials, it's the fulfillment of the fit and finish that began in the stages of design. Why all the fake wood lining under my knees? Why does the inner door fastener handle a two-piece affair with a sharp seam? Why is a truck that is so expensive flashing so much on its plastic pieces? There have been rumors of a remake of the crash for GM truck interiors, and one hopes that is true, as it is the biggest thing that holds those trucks back from impact.

The interior functions well well enough, but with almost comfortable seats an indecent amount of passenger space in the second row of the cabin. The cabin is also quiet, with wind and engine noise muted, if not exactly eliminated. The cab's visibility is good in all directions except upwards, thanks to a windshield that feels short and bunker-like, but the low beltline helps drivers see from the side and back. There is also ample storage inside, with a center console that is not as versatile as Ram's for storing personal electronics but offers ample storage space for bulky items.
The multimedia system works fine, but it starts to look like it's behind it in the display department. Ram's large 12-inch vertical screen makes everyone else look small, but even the smaller 8.4- offered Uconnect Ram touchscreen is larger than the 8-inch screen in Sierra. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and easily accessible. What the Sierra offer that others don't offer is a full-color, super-wide, head-up display that is standard on the AT4, and it's really very OK dynamite, but it disappears when you wear polarized sunglasses. GMC also offers some other sophisticated technologies, such as the aforementioned ProGrade Trailering camera system, which is invaluable if you plan to pull, and the new MultiPro rear door, which is less valuable when towed, since opening it to its full extension means, that it would go to hit the stop ball if you left one in the bumper attachment. Aside from this design fad, the MultiPro Rear Door is a sleek feature that actually turns out to be useful, making the rear door function like any number of things from table to bench, folding for easy access to the bed or acting like a traditional back door.
The new Sierra 2500 HD AT4 is only available in crew cab configuration, but can be either standard or long bed. The standard bed starts at $ 59,295 (all prices include destination), while the long bed is only $ 200 more. The 6.6-liter gas engine is standard, while upgrading to a 6.6-liter turbo diesel and 10-speed Allison automatic transmission will cost you $ 9,890. Four-wheel drive is standard on the AT4. My test truck had an AT4 Premium package that added a sliding, powerful rear window, premium infotainment system with navigation, Bose premium audio system, roof marker marker LEDs, blind spot detection warning, and a warning for $ 2115 in cross-wheel drive, rims and black side steps. Another $ 2125 brought the technology package with their HD surround cameras, rear-view mirror, head display and 8-inch digital gauge cluster. Add in power moonroof, Driver Alert and Gooseneck / 5th Wheel packages and more, and the total came to $ 77,010. Of course, you can also get cheaper GMC Sierra 2500 models for 2020, as GMC announced prices for the entire lineup earlier this year. The base price for the least expensive model – a 2,500-cabin bed is $ 37,195, with prices extending to 3,500 crew cabins, double Denali for $ 67,895. The total tested prices are expected to exceed the range of $ 80,000, or potentially up to $ 90,000 if you check each box.
From a pricing point of view, this actually makes it the equivalent of a Power Wagon, which generally comes with about $ 10,000 less, but then doesn't offer this option for $ 10,000 diesel engines. You can order other Ram HD models with the Off-Road package and it includes a decent amount of equipment such as Bilstein shocks, sliding plates and towing hooks. Chevrolet does not offer an equivalent level of trim for the Silverado 2500 models; The TrailBoss upholstery is limited to the Silverado 1500 light trucks. How the new AT4 fits into the upcoming Ford Super F-250 Duty Tremor remains to be seen, as pricing information goes a long way.
But if you're looking for a truck with some off-patters whose main purpose is still to act as a tow truck, the new Sierra 2500 AT4 is well worth a look. It provides a combination of style, features and unique features that make it an excellent choice.
