The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 28 additional deaths from COVID-19 on Monday as more long-term care facilities reported outbreaks of the virus.
Iowa reported 1,200 new positive cases of coronavirus on Monday. At 10 a.m., the health department reported 228,996 positive cases, 132,210 total recoveries and 2,403 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Iowa reported a total of 227,796 cases and 2,375 deaths 24 hours earlier.
State data show that 1,211,072 residents were tested for COVID-19. Iowa received 3,786 results from individual laboratory tests the day before, with 853 positive cases. The state receives data from tests from previous days, which are added to the total. The 14-day positive rate in Iowa rose from 17.8% to 18.9% on Monday.
Health data showed that 87 of Iowa’s 99 counties reported a 14-day positivity rate at or above 15%. Schools in these counties can apply for opt-out to provide 100% online tuition. Forty-two Iowa counties report a rate higher than 20%. The district of Lyon has reported a 31.3% positive rate in the last 14 days.
Trends in viral hospitalizations continue to decline in Iowa. There are currently 1,162 people hospitalized with the virus, up from 1,175 a day earlier. In the last 24 hours, 138 patients were admitted and 224 patients were included in intensive care. Both numbers decreased from the previous day.
Iowa reports approximately 3,500 hospital beds, 393 intensive care beds, and 843 ventilators available. Hospitalization analysis showed that 852 patients were hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, while 310 were hospitalized for another reason but were positive. State data show that 71% of those hospitalized are over 59 years old.
Two other long-term care facilities reported outbreaks of COVID-19 in Iowa, resulting in a total of 155. There were 4,937 positive cases and 2,078 recoveries in these facilities. There have been reports of 1,063 deaths in long-term care facilities in Iowa.
