695 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in California; record high for the state

California health officials added 695 deaths related to the new coronavirus on Saturday, a record high since the start of the pandemic. The total number of victims is currently 29,233. Data from the California Department of Public Health also shows that another 52,636 confirmed cases have been added, resulting in a total of 2,621,277. Health workers in the state provide 74,589 of the total confirmed cases and 281 of the total number of deaths. This follows an order from the State Department of Public Health, which requires that some minor and life-threatening operations be delayed in counties by 10% or less of the capacity of the intensive care unit in regions where the capacity of the intensive care unit is 0%. This order to increase hospitals affects San Joaquin and Stanislav counties, along with several other Central Valley and Southern California counties. In December, Gavin Newsum issued a new home stay order that divided the state into five different regions: Northern California, Greater Sacramento, Bay, San Joaquin Valley and Southern California. According to the new guidelines, each region that achieves less than 15% of the capacity of the intensive care unit triggers restrictions that force several companies to close or limit services. Of the five regions, Northern California is the only region not under the new restrictions, as its ICU capacity is over 15% as of Saturday night. The ICU numbers in the Gulf region will be evaluated in the coming days to determine if the region can exit the orders. The other three regions do not meet the exit criteria, according to the country’s four-week ICU capacity forecasts.
