Wake Forest, North Carolina – Officials conducted a water rescue at Falls Lake on Sunday, but could not prevent a 19-year-old man from drowning.
Witnesses who accompanied the victim told lawmakers they were swimming near a rocky area of the lake when the teenager called for help and then suddenly went underwater. One of the victim’s friends tried to save him, but failed.
Wake County Sheriff’s team was stationed within minutes of the call to begin the search, and around 10:30 p.m., they found the body.
Eric Curry of the Wake County Sheriff̵
“Safety should always be the first thing you think about, not just have a good time,” Curry said. “We go out here too many times because we have no respect for the waters here in Falls Lake.”
A similar incident happened last year in the same area to Wakefield High School student and football player Davion Davis.
Curry says precautions must be taken to avoid future tragedies.
“Be careful, be aware of where you are and wear a vest,” he said. “Whether you’re fishing or boating, which is a must, or even bumping into the water, you should always think about safety first.”
