NEAR MIAMI-DADE, FL. – Detectives from Miami-Dade are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old officer who worked in the Department of Homeland Security’s Department of Transportation.
A gunman in a dark four-door Nissan killed Leshonte Jones on Monday in the Coral Bay Cove apartments in the southern neighborhood of Naranya, Miami-Dade County, police said.
“We’re trying to figure out what the motive was here,”
Jones’ three-year-old daughter was injured in a shooting on Highway 25801 by S. Dixie. Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue officials took her to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. According to Zabaleta, she was in stable condition.
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence that took a young, vital police officer away from his family and away from us too early,” Daniel Ronan, TSA’s federal security director, said in a statement.
Jones was returning home after working a shift as a TSA employee at Miami International Airport.
“Words just can’t properly convey the huge loss we’re all experiencing right now,” Ronan said.
