A boat capsized from Point Loma in San Diego: 2 dead, 23 wounded

A suspected smuggling boat capsized and apparently disintegrated near Point Loma on Sunday morning, leaving at least three people dead and more than two dozen hospitalized, a fire official said.

Emergency crews received the call shortly before 10:30 a.m. after state park officials found people in distress in the water near the Cabrillo National Monument, officials said.

Rescuers helped pull 25 victims out of the water, five of whom had “CPR status,” meaning they had breathing problems, said Jose Jesse, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire and Rescue Service.

Three people died and 27 others were transported to local hospitals with what Ysea described as “varying degrees of injury.”

A video from OnScene TV showed medics carrying out RPRs on two men on a dock as the crew of a Coast Guard helicopter dropped a man into a basket in a field. The medics took some people in cabins, while others walked away with the medics.

The group reportedly rode in a low panga, a type of boat often used by smugglers to smuggle people into the United States from Mexico. Pangas are usually powered by outboard engines.

Smugglers of people and drugs are increasingly heading to the Pacific as an alternative route to the United States, after the Trump administration tightened land border infrastructure in recent years.

Ysea said that when he reached the site near the national monument, there was a large “debris field” in the water.

“It’s very rocky there, and the waves, though not too high, looked pretty strong,” he said, strong enough to hit a boat on the rocks.

Several Coast Guard ships have been sent to the area looking for victims, said border patrol agent Jeffrey Stephenson.

San Diego firefighters said they had hired 93 people to work on the incident, including medics, machine crews and a priest.
