COMMERCE CITY, Colorado – A Commerce City police officer on duty was killed in a head-on collision early Friday night, the Colorado State Patrol reported.
The deadly crash between an unmarked Ford City Commercial Police Department, a Ford F-350 and a Kia Soul occurred in the area of Highway 2 and Turnberry Parkway sometime before 6:20 p.m., the CSP said in a news release Friday night. The Ford F-350 was driving south on Highway 2, while the unmarked Ford Explorer and Kia Soul were traveling north on Highway 2.
Investigators said the F-350 came out on the right side of the road on its shoulder, then returned to the roadway and collided with the unmarked Explorer and Kia. The F-350 hit the Explorer head-on and collided with the side of the Kia driver̵
A police officer from the city’s commercial police and the driver of a Kia died in the accident.
The driver of the F-350 was taken to a University of Colorado hospital with life-threatening injuries. At the moment, the driver’s condition remains unknown.
The march took place late Friday night when law enforcement officers from across the Denver subway area gathered to escort the officer’s body to the medical examiner’s office. You can watch it in the video below.
The identity of the duty officer and the driver of the Kia were not immediately disclosed.
The CSProvider is actively investigating the case and the public is urged to stay away from the area, as the prolonged road closure will take effect over the next few hours.
