DALLAS – Authorities say a 72-year-old Dallas man fatally shot a suspected thief behind his home and then went to bed before finally calling police for about two hours.
The Dallas Morning News reports that James Michael Mayer was charged with manslaughter on Thursday and jailed on $ 1
According to the arrest warrant, Mayer told police he was woken up around 5 a.m. Thursday by a noise outside and I saw someone trying to break into his storehouse with a pick. He says he grabbed his gun, went outside and called for the man to stop and not come near or else he would fire.
Police allege that he told investigators that the man made several steps towards him, so he fired and the thief dropped his pickup truck and ran to the park behind his home. Police say he fired "at night" in the direction of the park and then went back to bed.
