A herd of wild elephants has been spotted resting on a spoon while sleeping, during an epic 313-mile journey through China that has captivated the world.
Charming new aerial footage shows members of the 15-herd herd making a well-deserved calf proximity near Xi’an on Monday after leaving a nature reserve in the southern province of Yunnan to migrate north more than a year ago, BBC News reported.
The uprooted pachyderms, tracked by 14 government drones, marched about 13 miles from the Kunming area on June 2 to their nap after heavy rains slowed their journey.
Last week, traveling swingers were escorted by police as they crowded near Kunming, a city of 8.5 million people, last week, causing at least 51
The fearless herd, which includes three calves, has crept along highways and through the harvest, causing economic losses of $ 1.1 million in recent weeks.
It is not clear why the animals left their habitat, and experts say such a long journey is rare for elephants. But researchers say they may be looking for new food sources due to deforestation.
“The size of the rainforests has shrunk and this has forced wild Asian elephants to leave their homes in Sishuangbana,” Zhang Li, an ecology professor specializing in elephant research, told Beijing News. “Expanding elephant families also increases their chances of moving to a new home.”
Chen Mingyong, a professor at the Asian Elephant Research Center at Yunnan University, said the package leader was probably “inexperienced and misled the whole group,” according to Xinhua.
The footage also shows massive mammals walking in rural villages, with the baby reportedly getting drunk at the time and fainting after eating fermented alcohol.
Officials also prepared snacks such as corn cobs, bananas and pineapples in an attempt to divert animals from urban areas.
The migration began in March last year, when the herd left with 17 elephants, according to the British fire brigade Yunnan, which is responsible for monitoring elephants.
