A French tourist dies in an attempt to take a selfie at a Thai waterfall

A 33-year-old man died Thursday after slipping and falling from Na Mueang 2 waterfall on Koh Samui, Thailand, the same spot where a Spanish tourist died in a fall in July, AFP reported.

Rescuers from the Na Mueang Rescue Unit recovered the body of a French tourist from Na Mueang 2 Waterfall on Koh Samui Island.

"A friend told him he was trying to take a selfie and then slipped and fell," Lieutenant Fuwadol Viriavarangukul of the island's tourist police told AFP.

Viriavarankul told the news agency that has been looted and there is a sign warning tourists about the danger.

CNN has contacted the French Foreign Ministry for comment on the incident.

Approximately 259 people worldwide have died while seafaring from October 2011 to November 2017, according to a study published in the Indian Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.
A Spanish man died at the same waterfall in July.

According to the study, most deaths occurred in India, followed by Russia, the United States and Pakistan. Most of the victims are men (about 72%) under the age of 30.

In October, four members of the same family drowned in a dam in India after slipping into the water while trying to take selfies. CNN's Saskya Vandoorne contributed to the story.
