Petara Cordero, Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Chris Smith's girlfriend, was killed Wednesday morning on a highway in Cleveland, the team said.
Smith retreated after his 2019 Lamborghini car, in which Cordero was a passenger, had a tire malfunction and hit the middle one, according to the team. After getting out of the car without significant injuries, Cordero was hit on the opposite side. According to a police statement, Smith was not impaired and was not injured.
Smith and Cordero have a daughter together last month. Cordero was 26.
Brown convened a team meeting later Wednesday morning to tell the players.
"Words cannot describe the grief we are experiencing for Chris after the loss of his girlfriend Petar," owners of Brownie Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. "Our whole organization is grieving with Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do everything we can to offer them our support, comfort and any resources at this most difficult time. "
