A witness to a crash with several vehicles in Maryland on Sunday was hailed as a hero after rescuing a small child whose car seat was dumped in a bay near Ocean City.
The five-car crash occurred on a bridge over Assawoman Bay shortly before 3 p.m., a city fire department said in a statement.
The 2-year-old girl was thrown from a pickup truck, which “sways” over the guardrail, the department announced.
“A heroic witness jumped from the bridge into the bay and saved the child,” a statement from city officials said.
The girl was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where she is in stable condition, officials said.
It is not clear what caused the incident, in which seven other people were injured.
The witness asked to remain anonymous, officials said.
