A large wildfire broke out Sunday night in the Bass River State Forest area east of Garden State Park in the southern counties of Ocean and Burlington.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Department said firefighters are working to contain about 70 acres of flames burning west of Otis God Road and south of Stage Road in Little Eg Harbor.
Fire crews will conduct incineration operations, igniting smaller controlled fires, hoping to protect buildings and homes along the Stage Road and the offshore mansion along Route 9, the fire department said. About 1
00 structures are at risk.
Route 9 is closed in the area, firefighters will be on site all night and everyone in the area is advised that smoke will prevail while firefighters work, the fire service said.
The evacuations in the area are voluntary, and Pinelands High School is a special shelter for those wishing to leave their homes, the service said.
The fire was first spotted around 4pm by the Bass River Fire Tower of the Forest Fire Department. No injuries were reported.
