A Philadelphia police officer fires while stopping traffic on West Somerville Avenue in Logan



PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A Philadelphia police officer was shot dead while stopping on Wednesday night in the Logan neighborhood of the city.

It happened on block 1500 on West Somerville Avenue just before 7 p.m.

According to Sgt. Eric Grip of the Philadelphia Police Department, an employee was fired when approaching a vehicle during a traffic stop. A total of five officers in full uniform were on the scene to assist before the shooting broke out.

As one of the officers approached the four-person vehicle, Grip said a 24-year-old man inside had produced a gun and started firing.

All five officers returned fire, killing the 24-year-old suspect, armed. A weapon was found at the scene. It is not yet known how many shots were fired by officers.

Influenza says the officer was shot in the leg and is currently hospitalized in stable condition.

“For someone who shoots a police officer, it̵

7;s very revealing, and it makes you wonder not only what was going on in his mind at the time, but also what he was trying to escape,” said Commissioner Daniel Outlaw. during a press briefing after the shooting.

The other three passengers in the car, a woman and two men, were not injured. They are currently being questioned by police.

Influenza says it is not yet known what caused the traffic stop.
