NOPD: New Orleans deputy police officer shot dead over mask argument

Good evening all. Is everyone good? We’re all at hand, Rosen. Okay. Uh-huh. Unfortunately, we’re here tonight as a result of, uh, an officer involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a law enforcement officer here in New Orleans. I have with me, uh, tonight, Chief Kirk Bar Alice of the Tulane University Police Department, and Officer Ed Shorter. Edwin Shorty of Second City Court Tonight. There was a basketball game here at George Washington Carver High School. Uh, unfortunately, while doing this basketball event, uh, a man tried to answer the game and dealt with one of the staff members as he tried to enter the game. Uh, the officer and I can’t name him right now. That’s a lot I want to be clear about. This is a very fluid situation. Uh, the policeman heard this disturbance and tried to intervene as a result of his intervention, trying to get this man out of the school, which is right in front of the front door of this school of this building. The man pulled out his weapon and fired, hitting the officer in the chest. The officer was moved to, um, look where he later expired and we’ll see that first of all. I would like to express my condolences to the family of this Tulane University family officer to the police office family. And I know many are wondering why Tulane University is here. And why the council offices are here. This officer, who we lost this brother in blue, who we lost tonight, was a two-lane police officer, but he was also a reserve officer in the second police department of the city court. Uh, this is a very fluid situation. Our mayor, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, was informed of this situation. She is well aware of this situation. 16 her condolences, our thoughts and prayers, too old for this officer’s family at Tulane University and his family, as well as the policeman and his family. We currently have a detainee who we believe is again responsible for this act. This is a very fluid situation. Our homicide detectives are a homicide unit that will lead this investigation, while our force investigation team will assist throughout the process. A suitable Force investigation team would normally take the lead in officer-related shootings. But this is an investigation into death. And as such, the murder will take the lead in this investigation. So, again, we offer our prayers and condolences to this officer and his family, uh, will not be able to give his name. We will trace his name later, as well as the person we have in custody. And we hope we can give you more information or context about what actually happened tonight. But that’s all I can give you tonight. I will not be able to answer any questions due to the fluidity of this situation. So please be patient with us. And I thank you for being here to allow us to provide this information to our community as best we can. Thank you.
