Shelby County Health Department is investigating what appeared to be a big party on Saturday night, attended by hundreds of people, at a large party tent on Winchester Road.
According to photos of the All Black Affair on social media, many of them were not masked or socially distanced.
The annual party was held at 7144 Winchester in In Love Memphis, a club the health department cited on Oct. 10 for COVID-19 violations. He was not excluded.
The name refers to the all-black clothing code.
“With the cases of COVID-19 growing exponentially in Shelby County, it is extremely unfortunate that some people have chosen to endanger themselves and others by attending large gatherings without wearing a mask. This was a violation of the current health directive of the Department of Health, “said Ursula Madden, a spokeswoman for the city of Memphis.
This is a message that several local owners of nail salons, beauticians and other business owners shared on Instagram after the party.
“As has been the case for several months now, in addition to the Shelby County Sheriff, the City of Memphis is ready to assist the Shelby County Health Department with the implementation of their health directives as and when necessary.”
The party is under investigation, according to Lee Harris, mayor of Shelby County. According to media reports he saw, this seemed like a “huge social gathering.”
The event took place in a large tent next to the club. Guests can choose to be in the “balloon”, the club or the courtyard attached to the club, according to Daryl Sanford, a musician who performed from 17:30 to 19:00 with the band Love Theory.
“There wasn’t such a big crowd when we were there,” Sanford said. “Everyone socially distanced themselves. The DJ told people they had to put on their masks.
“I don’t know what happened after we left,” Sanford said.
The “bubble” was big enough that it was easy for about 100 people there when he was running a social distance, he said.
The annual event is sponsored by CGI Entertainment, a business owned by Curtis Givens.
Givens did not respond to phone calls to his business or requests to speak sent to his Facebook account.
He started as a party organizer in high school and used his skills to start a nightclub business.
He and his brother Corlis Givens own and run the In Love Club in Hickory Hill.
According to Eventbrite’s ticket sales site, tickets range from $ 20 to $ 2,000.
Health ministry officials did not respond to numerous requests for interviews on Monday.
Health authorities have jurisdiction to close businesses that do not comply with the restrictions set out in the health directives.
“There must be a way to fine people who do this, to hold them financially responsible for putting the population at risk,” said Dr. Jeff Warren, a member of the COVID-19 working group and a member of the City Council who learned of the party from a doctor who passed by and saw hundreds of vehicles in the parking lot on Saturday night.
Following the event, Givens posted a video on Instagram with testimonies of two residents of Washington, DC, who attended the balloon party.
The next day, Givens posted a free entry notice, a “pop-up” balloon party.
Several local beauticians and nail salon owners have asked clients attending the All Black Affair (or other major events) to reschedule or cancel their appointments.
Dr. Manoj Jane heard about the party late Saturday when city officials called him.
“Watching the video was disturbing; “It was disappointing that even with all the messages we make, people don’t stick to it,” he said.
From what he could see in videos shared with him, the patrons were young adults between the ages of 25 and 34.
“What we do know is that the very old age group has the highest rate of COVID infection. They make up 6% of the population, but they make up 21% of the cases, “said Jane.
“It is worrying that people are still not adhering to the most basic recommendations,” he said. “It simply came to our notice then. The end is visible.
“Our hospitals are overwhelmed with young and old patients. Our intensive care units are also overcrowded. One in three beds in the intensive care unit has a patient with COVID. One on each regular hospital bed is a patient with COVID. This number is constantly increasing. “
Moderna released final data from a clinical trial of its COVID-19 vaccine early Monday, showing it was 94.1% effective against the virus, including severe cases. He plans to seek immediate FDA approval for emergency use. Pfizer, which had similar clinical results, began shipping its vaccine late last week.
Givenses have worked at several nightclubs in the city, including Level II, the former Premier Club. They also operated Silver Spoon, which was a bar, restaurant and nightclub.
