Indeed, Amazon's Echo Buds wireless headsets are excellent for the $ 130 price tag as they were the elephant in the room when we previewed Apple's new AirPods Pro. And they succeeded in this sonic feat without one of their biggest rumors – the ability to double as a fitness tracker and measure the calories you burned.
But don't rule out fitness tracking just yet, because CNBC and The Verge noticed a new "Fitness" section in the "Echo Buds" section of the Alexa app today. You can see some screenshots from our app below:
While waiting for an Amazon spokesperson to confirm if we really need to get excited of more functionality – or if it's just a vestigial component of an earlier test – CNBC Todd Hasselton says he has managed to start several workouts, ones where Echo Buds seem to be tracking in his footsteps.
It is not clear how well Echo Buds will work as a fitness tracker. They are touted as "ready for exercise" with IPX4 water and sweat resistance, but many modern fitness trackers and smartwatches use heart rate monitors to improve their accuracy beyond what ordinary accelerometers can appreciate. The Echo Buds do not appear to have a built-in heart rate monitor.
