Flightradar24, which monitors air traffic, wrote on its Twitter account that the 27-year-old plane “lost more than 10,000 feet in less than a minute, about 4 minutes after taking off from Jakarta.” As the search effort expanded. and rescue, a fisherman in the Thousand Islands, a chain of islands north of Jakarta, told local media that they had spotted metal objects that looked like parts of an airplane.
Indonesian media also aired footage of frantic friends and families of passengers gathered at Jakarta and Pontianacon airports, crying and praying.

At the end of 2018, the Boeing 737 Max, operated by the Indonesian airline Lion Air, crashed, killing all 189 passengers and crew.
737 Max was grounded worldwide after a crash five months later in Ethiopia, accused of a structural defect in the flight control system. Investigators later found that the software flaw and other problems had been ignored or minimized by the company’s engineers.
In 2014, an AirAsia plane crashed into the sea, killing 162 people on a flight from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore.
