Sometimes the brothers hug. Sometimes brothers argue. This is just the nature of the thing.
So for a couple of boys who have been together as long as Anthony Rizzo and Wilson Contreras, it’s only natural that they might get into an argument from time to time. This rarely includes during play and cameras can catch it. So, late in the game last night, Rizzo and Contreras entered it.
Here you can see the swelling of the dugout, including David Ross walking Rizzo down into the clubhouse (probably to disperse, but also to take it out of sight):
David Ross gave him a general explanation there, but it is not entirely clear what accelerated the dispute or what it was about. Don’t get me wrong, as a fan I want to knowing because it’s probably interesting, but I also guess it’s best not to go into details. In fact, there is no need for the point of view of the little ones, and I respect that.
After the game, here is how Anthony Rizzo expressed himself, noting that the two have already cleared the air (Cubs.com):
“It’s just competition and that’s what it’s all about,” Rizzo said. “The beauty of this team is that we know each other and have played with each other for so long that we can have these fraternal love conversations ….
“It simply came to our notice then. “We’re just moving forward,” Rizzo said. “With our relationships here, it’s as easy to talk to each other as if we were brothers.”
Rizzo also used the moment to praise Contreras, who is known for playing with an excess of emotion.
“I love Wilson,” said the first man. “I don’t think the way he plays for this team, for our city – with the passion he plays with, you can compare him in this league.”
There is no reason to think that there is serious drama here. Only a couple of boys who are very passionate about what they do, being late for a second night in a row, probably disagree on how to deal with a particular situation. Unless something else pops up, it’s a move forward.
I guess they didn’t fight rodents in the clubhouse.
