Apple announces App Store program for small business

“Small business is the backbone of our global economy and the heart of innovation and opportunity in communities around the world. We’re launching this program to help small business owners write the next chapter on creativity and prosperity in the App Store and build the quality apps our customers love, “said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The App Store is an engine of economic growth like no other, creating millions of new jobs and a path to entrepreneurship accessible to anyone with a great idea. Our new program brings this progress forward – helping developers finance their small businesses, take risks for new ideas, expand their teams and continue to make applications that enrich people̵

7;s lives. ”

Although detailed details will be published in early December, the basics of the criteria for participation in the program are simple and streamlined:

  • Existing developers who have made up to $ 1 million in 2020 for all their apps, as well as developers new to the App Store, can qualify for the program and the reduced commission.
  • If a participating developer exceeds the $ 1 million threshold, the standard commission rate will apply for the rest of the year.
  • If the developer’s business falls below the $ 1 million threshold in a future calendar year, they may qualify for the 15 percent commission next year.

The standard 30 percent commission rate on the App Store remains in effect for apps that sell digital goods and services and generate more than $ 1 million in revenue, defined as commission commission profit after commission. Earlier this year, an independent study by the Analysis Group found that Apple’s commission structure is key to app and game distribution platforms.

Small business owners will continue to benefit from Apple’s unparalleled set of tools – including development applications, programming languages, a secure payment interface and more than 250,000 basic software building blocks called the API. Apple is committed to giving developers tools to turn your brightest ideas into applications that change the world. Tools like HealthKit give engineers secure access to user health data, ARKit enables developers to explore new frontiers of augmented reality, and Core ML uses the speed and intelligence of machine learning to help developers build powerful features with just a few line code.
