Apple is bringing home an engineering Emmy for its ubiquitous ProRes video technology

Apple took home the Emmy Engineering Award for its ProRes video codec, first developed in 2007, which is widely used in digital TV and film production (through 9 to 5Mac). As noted by the Apple team that accepted the award, it has gained popularity because it can preserve the size of video files, while maintaining high levels of detail and allows fast encoding and decoding.

The codec really exploded in popularity with the release of Arri’s Alexa digital camera in 2010. Apple̵

7;s ProRes QuickTime formats allowed directors to directly edit footage without recoding and little loss of quality, saving a huge amount of time and hassle. This is especially useful for TV work that requires a quick turnaround between shooting and editing. Apple has already won several Emmys Engineering Awards, including Final Cut Pro, iPad development and Firewire technology.
