Architects unveil design for a space hotel that aims to have 100 guests in the stars by 2025

Designs for the first commercial space hotel that will be like a 'cruise ship' have been unveiled and they are truly out of this world.

The Van Braun Space Station is designed by the Gateway Foundation's Tim Alatorre and will feature gravity, full-service kitchens, bars and natural feeling interiors.

It is expected to be 'operational by 2025 with 100 tourists visiting the station per week,' according to a senior design architect for the project.

Just like Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century is envisioned a world ready for live in space, soon travelers will get to enjoy their very own galactic vacation up in the stars at a hotel that looks strikingly similar to the space station in 1

999 Disney movie.

'Eventually, going to space will just be another option people will pick for their vacation, just like going on a cruise, or going to Disney World,' Alatorre explained to Dezeen. 'The Gateway Foundation's goal is to have the Von Braun operational by 2025 with 100 tourists visiting the station per week.'

He continued: 'Because the overall costs are still high most people assume that space tourism will only be available to the super rich, and while I think this will be true for the next few years, the Gateway Foundation has a goal of making space travel open to everyone. '

Building off the technology of the International Space Station, the Von Braun Space Station will have an artificial gravity setting it apart from the ISS. Its design is based on concepts developed by Wernher von Braun in the 1950s.

A 190-meter-diameter wheel will rotate to create a gravitational force similar to the one felt on the moon. 24 individual modules are located around the wheel and are filled with sleeping accommodations.

Alatorre added: 'There will also be many of the things you see on cruise ships: restaurants, bars, musical concerts, movie screenings, and educational seminars.'

Inside, interiors will be made out of natural materials and will offer visitors a comfortable and homely experience.

'Developments in material science now allow for lightweight, easily cleanable natural material substitutes for stone and wood that would normally not be feasible to bring into orbit,' said Alatorre.

'The use of fabrics, warm-colored lighting and paints, and materials with texture, all help us connect and feel at home. Because the station will have gravity there will be a sense of direction and orientation that is not present in the ISS. '

'We are planning on full-service kitchens with all the dishes you would expect on a luxury cruise ship or in a major hotel,' added Alatorre. 'A lot of logistics issues for the food service have been worked out years ago by the cruise ship industry.'

Following the completion of the space hotel, the Gateway Foundation plans to go even bigger.

'Looking beyond 2030, the Von Braun Station is a proof of concept for the Gateway Foundation's next project which is a class of station called The Gateway, which will house over 1,400 people,' explained Alatorre.

'These will be true cities in space that will be ports of call for those coming and going from the moon and Mars. '
