Are you buying your first Android wearable? Here’s what you need to know

Apple Watch is ubiquitous among iPhone owners: it’s the idea for iOS devices. Android, on the other hand, doesn’t have such a unique, easy-to-recommend smartwatch – we have all sorts of options from many different manufacturers. Here’s a quick guide to some of your best options in the various categories.

Wear the OS

Wear OS is a kind of de facto wearable platform for Android phones. Formerly known as Android Wear, the operating system was created by Google, which means that the watches that work with it have access to a relatively healthy selection of third-party applications through the Play Store, as well as Google Assistant. It is known that walking long distances without any significant development, and the clocks that perform it, are quite similar. But they are not identical! Here are some of the best options.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 is currently the highest brand for Wear OS devices. It has a Qualcomm Wear 4100 chip and a full gigabyte of RAM, which means it has the best performance you can find in any Wear OS watch. It also has excellent battery life thanks to its dual-screen design: when the LED display is off, the low-power LCD takes over to show the time. It doesn’t have a rotating crown for menu navigation, as many smartwatches do, but it’s a useful discount for getting a Wear OS watch that’s hardly disappointing. You’ll pay a lot for the privilege: TicWatch Pro 3 starts at $ 300. Check out our full review for more.

Skagen Falster 3

Skagen Falster 3 still shakes the older Wear 3100 chipset, but unlike many Wear OS devices, it has the full gigabyte of RAM. Google’s wearable platform should function without much hiccups. It’s now more than a year old, but when it was released, our review called it “one of the best options available” in the Wear OS space. This is still true today and is significantly cheaper than the above Mobvoi – lately you can find it for $ 200 or less.

Fitbit

Fitbit is one of the most popular players in the wearable space, launching its first device back in 2009. Google signed an agreement to buy Fitbit in 2019 and began selling Fitbit products through its own store this year. The acquisition still faces legal hurdles, and so far Fitbit devices haven’t changed much from what they were before the company became part of Google.

Fitbit Sense

The Sense is Fitbit’s best smartwatch. It monitors all health indicators: footsteps, sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and even stress (presumably). ECG scans can even be done. It has a very nice stainless steel case, its battery can last up to a week on a single charge (if you still do not use the display constantly) and has the integration of Google Assistant and Alexa. We mentioned it in our review because of its high price: its MSRP is a whopping $ 330. It’s often already available for less, and if you can find it for $ 250 or more, you get a very fair deal.

Fitbit Versa 3

Fitbit Versa 3 is very similar to Fitbit Sense: the same shape, the same display, the same battery life. The only differences are that the Versa 3 cannot do ECG scanning or voltage reading, and the case is made of aluminum instead of steel. If these things don’t matter to you, you can save a significant portion of the change with the smaller watch – the Versa 3 retails for $ 230 and can often be found for less. Fitbit Charge 4

Charge 4 is a simpler tracker than Fitbit. It monitors most of the same things as Sense and Versa 3 – steps, momentum, sleep, SpO2 – but unlike these smartwatches, Charge 4 does not have access to a voice assistant. However, it is smaller and cheaper at an MSRP of $ 150 (and a street price that is often lower). In our review, Manuel called it “a reliable, full-featured fitness tracker that also offers some advanced smartwatch features such as stable notification management and NFC payments.”

Samsung

Samsung produces excellent smartwatches and fitness trackers that are compatible not only with the company’s own phones, but also with any Android device. Compared to Wear OS, the user experience of Samsung-based Tizen devices is usually smoother – but Galaxy carriers do not have access to the Play Store and Google Assistant. Still, if these aren’t the features you expect from a smartwatch, this is a great way.

Galaxy Watch3

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch3 is currently the best to wear. In our review, Corbyn praised the hardware design and software finesse of the Watch3: in addition to the touch screen, the watch has a rotating panel used for navigation, which is fun and intuitive. His MSRP starts at an astronomical $ 400, but lately you can get one for $ 250.

Galaxy Watch Active2

Watch Active2 shares most of the advantages of Watch3, except for its more sophisticated design (Active2 is, if you can’t guess, positioned as a more sporty device) and a rotating panel. However, to give up these pleasures, you save a lot of money. Active2’s MSRP starts at $ 270 and you can find them closer to $ 200 more often. For more information, read our full review here.

Galaxy Fit2

As a fitness group, the Galaxy Fit2 is smaller and simpler than any of the above smartwatches, but still delivers notifications and tracks fitness metrics such as steps and sleep. It is too cheap, with an MSRP of $ 60 and a street price that is often even lower.

Others

But wait, there’s more! Some wearables run custom software that we have not covered above. These devices are sometimes niche and often cheaper than options like Wear OS and Fitbits watches. Here are some of our favorites.

Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR

Jorn Hybrid HR is a traditional analog watch with a low-power electronic ink display under your hands. The result is a simpler, less adaptable smartwatch that still delivers notifications and tracks fitness performance, but with battery life measured in weeks, not hours. Our reivew called it a “great non-smart watch”, ideal for people who want a smart experience without much hassle. This is a beautiful shoot to load. You can get one for about $ 200.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5

Xiaomi’s Mi Band 5 is cheap – it’s not uncommon to see it on sale for under $ 30. In our review, Manuel noted that while “there are no sophisticated options for automatic exercise tracking, mobile payment options, voice commands, and GPS on board,” it’s “good enough to give you a broad overview of how you’re doing. a day or during your workout. “If you want to dip your toe in the water you can carry, for the smallest possible investment, you won’t do much better than that.
