Ashok Gasti, a member of BJP Rajya Sabha of Karnataka, has died of COVID-19, the hospital confirmed on Thursday, hours after confusion caused by tweets of condolences posted by top politicians.
The 55-year-old man is seriously ill and was admitted to Manipal Hospital.

The hospital reported that Rajya Sabha’s member was admitted with severe COVID-19 pneumonia and was critical after multiorgan failure. He was on life support in the intensive care unit (intensive care unit).
Mr. Gasty was from Raichur in North Karnataka and had previously been a stand worker.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Mr Gasty “dedicated kariakarta“and shouted his death on Twitter:

Following his smooth election in June this year, Mr Gastti was not present in Parliament due to the pandemic. He was a member of Raja Sabha for the first time.
During his nomination, Mr. Gasty had told NDTV, “This is a very happy event. A booth worker is recognized in this way. This kind of recognition is only possible in the BJP. It has given a lot of enthusiasm to the lacquer workers of the BJP. I want to thank all the leaders of BJP. “
Condolences began raining down on Twitter after Mr Gasty’s death.
“Shocked and anesthetized by the untimely death of Raja Sabha MP and senior BJP leader from Karnataka, Sri Ashok Gasti Ji. Over the years, he has served the organization and the nation in many roles. My deepest condolences are to his family in this hour of grief. “Om Shanti Shanti Shanti,” Amit Shah tweeted.
Vice President and President of Raja Sabha M. Venkaya Naidu expressed his grief and said that Mr. Gasti is known for “his simplicity and commitment to the upliftment of the descendants.”

The chairman of the Karnataka Congress, D.K. Shivakumar wrote on Twitter: “Deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Raja Sabha MP from Karnataka Sri. Ashok Ghasti. My condolences to his family and friends.”
Leaders also posted messages earlier in the day, but later deleted them.
