Asteroid dust can cope with global warming, scientists say



WASHINGTON – A group of Swedish researchers believe that a cataclysmic asteroid collision from hundreds of millions of years ago may have the answers to address climate change.

An international study examines the consequences after a huge asteroid was crushed between Jupiter and Mars, sending large quantities of dust through the solar system. The dust had a "blocking effect" on sunlight reaching the Earth, causing a glacial period and creating climatic zones on Earth. Previously, it was said that the Earth had a more homogeneous environment.

"Our results show for the first time that such dust has cooled the Earth dramatically," says Birger Schmitz, a professor of geology at Lund University and head of research. "Our research can provide a more detailed, empirical basis for understanding how it works, and this in turn can be used to evaluate whether model simulations are realistic. "
