Asus announced its new ZenBeam Latte at CES 2021 today and is quite cute. This is a mobile movie projector that looks like a one-eyed, fabric-covered mini robot. Importantly, it burns out its 720p image using up to 300 lumens of LED light, making it brighter than the capsule projectors we’ve seen from similar Anker, and has a built-in 10W Harman Kardon tuned charging speaker system.
Strangely, Asus insists that its projector looks like a coffee cup.
This is not so. This is not the right shape (just watch the video!) And why would a “homemade” coffee cup (Asus’ word) be gray instead of glorious brown? Asus also claims to be “the first projector to offer a fabric look,” which is clearly untrue.
Of course, you can’t drink Asus latte because it only distributes light and sound. However, it can design your phone or HDMI device wirelessly.
So consider this option, gadget manufacturers: build a coffee cup that Asus did not. Just make sure it lasts longer than a movie – Asus quotes three hours from a 6000 mAh battery – and gets bright enough to create a decent-sized screen. Asus says it can create a 40-inch picture when placed a meter from the wall, 80 inches by two meters and a maximum of 120 inches (probably three meters). However, do not expect a 300-lumen projector to be very bright nine meters away.
Asus says it is coming to the United States in the second quarter of the year, but there is no word on pricing.
