One of the most sophisticated and precise time storage devices, it looks straight from a James Bond movie, and will be auctioned for seven figures.
AMC Urwerk (for Atomic Master Control) is a hybrid system made of two "standalone but connected" parts, according to Urwerk.
The first is a nearly 70-pound "base unit" aluminum box – it looks like Agent 007 may need to deactivate a bomb – which is a state of the art atomic clock. The atomic clock maintains the planet's most accurate time essentially by measuring the high-speed vibrations of atoms.
The other part, considered as the mobile unit, is a mechanical clock that can be placed in the base unit to correct any inconsistencies in the retention of time, as well as to "compensate for any minute changes in temperature, air pressure or humidity. ", according to Urwerk.
AMC Urwerk "maintains accuracy up to one second every 317 years," Paul Butros, watchmaker for Phillips auction house, tells CNBC.
This hybrid device is one of the best batches in the upcoming Phillips watch sales, called
the combo of watches and watches took almost a decade, and will only make three sets of AMCs by Urwerk, each priced at $ 2.7 million retail.
This auctioneer is for sale by an owner who wants to remain anonymous, and he is the first to make his way to the aftermarket. Boutros tells CNBC the estimate will start much lower than the original sale price, from $ 1 million to $ 2 million.
Boutros explains that there is a strategy for determining the auction valuation: "We give customers the opportunity to get something at a good price, conservatively valuing, to build interest in the piece." Ultimately, he hopes increased interest will lead to a higher hammer price.
So who would be interested in dropping seven figures on such an extreme storage machine? "Urwerk's AMC will really appeal to people who value craftsmanship, precision and skill," says Butros.
The Phillips Changers Changers auction will be held in New York on December 10.
