From there, NASA could work its way to building a sustainable presence – or permanent base – on the moon, Forczyk said. That base could allow astronauts to train for longer-term operations on other planets such as Mars. And further exploration and mining of the moon's resources, such as water ice, could be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen, which could be used in propellant farms to fuel rockets going elsewhere in the solar system
