BUTLER COMPANY, LUCERNE CURSIA (WBRE / WYOU) – An accident involving a flat-bed truck carrying one million honey bees was blamed for the closure of section 81 of Interstate 81 on Friday night.
The bees are transported in boxes around 5:30 p.m., when the driver loses control of the vehicle and crashes.
This caused hives to scatter and buzz in the area, forcing authorities to close section I-81 south of exit 151 B, the 80b Westbound inter-village separation station and exit 145, West Hazleton exit.
An EMS chief called a nearby beekeeper he knew to gather the bees.
Police directed traffic to Route 93 while the interstate was closed.
No injuries were reported, but a firefighter received a bee sting on the lip.
