Belgian pet owners recall being alert on International Rabies Awareness Day

Sunday, September 29, 2019

Pet owners (dogs, cats, ferrets …) traveling with their fluffy friend must make sure their animal is vaccinated against rabies.

The Belgian Federal Food Chain Safety Agency (Afsca) issued a reminder on Saturday, during the International Rabies Awareness Day.

Afsca is responsible for the prevention and control of repaired animal diseases.

'Past efforts ensure that Belgium has been free from rabies since 2001

. Vaccination against rabies is no longer compulsory in Belgium since 2016. But anyone who takes their dog or cat abroad or brings an animal to Belgium must vaccinate them. This is necessary because rabies kills both humans and animals. We cannot take any risks, "said Jean-François Hymans, Head of Belgian Veterinary Services and Director of Animal Health in Africa.

424 dogs and cats were brought from Belgium and tested through Belgium. 2018 Afsca stated that 47 animals were rejected and three should be removed due to public health risk.
