1; The United States and the United Kingdom have pledged to agree on a new “Atlantic Charter” to strengthen trade, travel and technological ties between the two nations.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Joe Biden will meet on Thursday ahead of the G7 summit, which begins on Friday in Cornwall, south-west England.

Prior to the summit, leaders must agree on a new charter, modeled on the political declaration made by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, which sets out their goals for the postwar world.

The original Atlantic Charter includes agreements to promote democracy and free trade. In a statement issued late Wednesday, the UK government said the 1941 charter was “one of the greatest triumphs in UK-US relations”, which “has done more than any other agreement to shape the world.” an order leading directly to the creation of the United Nations and NATO. “

The British government noted that the 2021 Atlantic Charter would recognize that although the world is very different from 1941, “the values that Britain and the United States share remain the same.”

“Just as our countries worked together to rebuild the world after World War II, so we will work together to meet the enormous challenges facing the planet today – from global defense and security to better recovery from the coronavirus to stopping climate change, “it said.

The agreements under the new charter are expected to include commitments to resume travel between the UK and the US, boost trade and a “landmark” technology pact designed to facilitate co-operation between British and US technology companies.

It will also address newer challenges, such as tackling the threat posed by cyberattacks, addressing climate change and protecting biodiversity, and efforts to end and recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The commitments made in the charter will be backed by a series of new political priorities expected to be agreed by Johnson and Biden on Thursday, including work to open travel between Britain and the United States as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States eased travel recommendations for more than 110 countries and territories. But Britain was not on the list, given the prevalence of the Delta variant, originally found in India.

The United States currently bans almost all non-US citizens who have been in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the 26 Schengen countries in Europe that do not have border controls in the previous 14 days.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that the Biden administration has formed expert working groups with Canada, Mexico, the EU and the United Kingdom to determine how best to restart the trip safely, citing a White House spokesman.

The United Kingdom said the new travel task force would be overseen by the country’s Department of Transportation and their US counterparts.

Tariff dispute

Biden and Johnson will also look for ways to improve economic relations between the countries, “including by resolving the civil aircraft dispute,” the UK said, reiterating hopes of ending a long-running US-Europe tariff dispute over their respective competitors. for the production of Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

Leaders are also expected to agree to “pursue a landmark bilateral technology agreement” to be signed in 2022.

“The agreement will usher in a new era of strategic cooperation by reducing the barriers that British technology companies face when trying to work with their American counterparts. By combining our shared experience in areas such as AI and quantum technology, the UK and US have potential to transform the way we live. “

Commenting on the charter, Prime Minister Johnson said that “while Churchill and Roosevelt are faced with the question of how to help the world recover from a devastating war, today we must face a very different but no less frightening challenge – how to build better than the coronavirus pandemic, “the statement said Wednesday.

“And as we do this, cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States, its closest partners and largest allies, will be crucial to the future of global stability and prosperity.”
