Patriots quarterback Cam Newton defeated Bill Belichick with his work ethic at their first training camp together.
Belichik told SiriusXM NFL Radio that Newton was as hard a worker as the Patriots coach.
“I understand why he has been as successful as he was in Auburn and Carolina,” Belichik said. “Talking to people who were there with him, the things they said about him in Auburn and Carolina a decade ago or 2-3 years ago or even last year, it’s all the same and it came here: He’s an extremely hard worker . No one works harder than Cam. He is here early, stays late and works very hard. Some players like to work on things they are good at, such as if you are strong on the bench, you just put more weight on the bench. But Kam is working on things he’s not doing well, and he’s trying to improve on a daily basis, and that’s something I really respect about him. This is not easy for the players or really for each of us. We will get something in which we are not really good or not our strength and you take extra time for this when our natural tendency is to do things in which we are good. So he works extremely hard in all areas. “
This is an enthusiastic response from Belichick, which sounds optimistic that Newton could revive his career in New England.
