American comedian and TV presenter Bill Maher mocked bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, including dogecoin, in his show on Friday. He cited several critics of bitcoin: Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Black Swan author Nassim Taleb.
Bill Maher admits that he does not receive bitcoin
TV presenter and political commentator Bill Maher mocked Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on his real-time show with Bill Maher on Friday. Calling bitcoin, dogecoin and several other cryptocurrencies, he said that as far as it is concerned, dogecoin is “the same as all other cryptocurrencies, because everything is a joke.” He called dogecoin “money for Easter bunnies” and likened cryptocurrencies to Tinkerbell’s light. “Its source of energy is based only on enough children who believe in it,” he said.
Claiming to have read articles on cryptocurrencies, and if it was explained to him, Maher said:
I still don’t understand it, neither you nor anyone else.
Maher then spoke of Satoshi Nakamoto, saying that the names of the pseudonymous creator of bitcoins “are the Japanese words for monopoly money.”
He then said that money should come from and be generated from something real somewhere that the cryptocurrency says “no, no”, and quoted Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett as saying. “Maybe that’s why Warren Buffett says that ‘cryptocurrencies don’t really have value and don’t produce anything. You hope someone else comes to you and pays you more for them later, but then that person got the problem. In terms of value: zero. ‘”
The TV presenter then quoted the author of “Black Swan” Nasim Taleb, who said that bitcoin is an “open scheme of ponchos”. Maher added: “It’s like having an imaginary best friend who is also a banker,” noting how the world economy collapsed in 2009.
Maher then attacked the power needed to mine bitcoins, quoting Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who said:
Bitcoin uses more electricity for a transaction than any other method known to mankind.
Moreover, he attacked Tesla, saying, “How can a company like Tesla be involved in saving the planet with electric cars and then involved destroying it with this completely unnecessary online gaming money?”
The comedian then transferred his attack to Bitcoin supporters. He said:
You are a money-hungry opportunist and you are not allowed to pretend to care about the environment.
Maher then quoted a magazine as saying that “the growth of bitcoins could single-handedly push global temperatures above the 2-degree Celsius tipping point.
Many members of the crypto community fired at Maher on social media. One commented that Maher’s perception of bitcoins and cryptocurrencies was “meaningless and uninformed.” Another said: “Almost everything in this video is inaccurate or just wrong. Nonsense about the sheep from the mass market that will rub it off as facts. Bitcoin does not lose energy. Bitcoin is freedom from parasites. And you can’t stop it. “
The Twitter handle Brekkie von Bitcoin said: “Such a disappointing opinion from Bill Maher. This diatribe feels as if it has been studied for an hour and written in half that time. I’m sad when people realize that the world is broken, but they don’t see the solution when it’s right in front of them. Maher tweet fan:
Huge fan Bill, but it’s a terrible study. Don’t you think? Buffett is 100 years old, he doesn’t know technology. USD is also not supported by anything and they do not just print 1 trillion bitcoins out of nothing, devaluing it as USD.
Researcher Nick Carter posted a video refuting Maher’s statement “the claim that bitcoin will warm the climate by 2ºc (none).” “Most of the energy it uses is either renewable energy (hydro, geothermal, etc.) or waste energy that has been converted into something useful (natural gas combustion). You also assume that bitcoin does not provide value, which is definitely not true, “described one user.
Morgan Creek’s digital partner Anthony Pompliano offered to explain Maher’s bitcoin: “[I] “Think that you are missing some key information that would change your mind,” he wrote. Robert Breedlov told Maher that “Condemnation without investigation is the pinnacle of ignorance,” urging him to “do your job as a journalist and investigate.” Bitcoin fixes most of the socio-political issues you complain about. “
