Joseph Goodman, sports columnist for AL.com, and Lee Sterling, a college professional handicap, return for Joe's 11th season against the pro.
What is Joe vs. Professional? Consider it a service to the community.
What happens when a sports writer picks some of the toughest games of the week and goes head to head? So far, the pro has been beating Joe every year except for two. Pro presents his best picks on his website, ParamountSports.com, but he fearlessly picks the toughest college games of the week against Joe. There's an old saying about these parts: fade Joe in for the dough.
Tap the barrels and drink the junk, the girls and the boys. College football is back, and we are in a state of excitement … and nervous tension. What an off-season it was. Nick Saban has a new hips thanks to Dabo Sweeney, and Urban Mayer heads for that awesome scrap in the sky known as Fox Sports. Joe doesn't have a new hip … yet, but he has a new schedule for Joe against the pro. Who can blame him? His old mug was uglier than his picks. Many teams have had a facelift during the off-season, but none are more pronounced than Rud and Oklahoma. Gus Malzahn promises that things will be different on the plains now that he calls play again. Good luck with a true freshman, coach. In Oklahoma, Jalen Herts has to follow in the footsteps of two Heisman trophy winners. If one can flourish under this type of pressure, then it is him. Counter-Strike: Joe. See the end of 201
Joe: 72-32 straight, 45-54-5 against spread
Pro: 70-34 straight, 47-52-5 against spread
Notes: Pro used a strong season finale to take the title against spread, going 6-1-1 against spread during rivalry week. Joe went 2-5-1 to lose Joe against the Pro for the ninth time in 10 seasons. Joe's consolation prize for the race was a set of tickets to Maryland's football season. It was a modern holiday gift last year.
No.14 Utah at BYU
When: 9:15 PM, Thurs.
Where: LaVell Edwards Stadium, Provo, Utah Television: ESPN
Series: Utah leads 61-34-4, according to Utah; Utah leads 58-31-4, according to BYU.
Distribution: Utah by 6.
SUPER ARTICLE OF THE WEEK: Utah's fastest defense was ranked fifth in the nation in 2018 (100.3 rpg), and this season the first team has combined for 126 career starts.
Joe says: This is one of the best rivalries and watching matches for the first Thursday night of the season. For the first time, Utah and BYU are discovering the season together, and all of that after finishing 2018 with such a dramatic game. BYU led 20-0, but Utah blew back. Now some are choosing Utah to make College Football Playoff after losing to Northwestern in the Holiday Cup. Is Utah real? This will be a huge ordeal. BYU coach Kalani Sitake (20-19 entering his fourth season) really needs that win (0-3 against Utah), but Utah South Florida veteran backer quarterback Tyler Huntley (Dania Beach) and running back Zach Moss (Hialeah) Gardens) did it. I just want to know if Utah kids have the stones to sip alcohol at BYU.
Joe's Choice: Utah 28, BJ 25
Pro says: The Utes defeated the Cougars last year without their starting quarterback Tyler Huntley and star running back Zach Moss. Both are back plus the top 5 wide receivers and perhaps the best defensive line in the country. I'm not sure BYU has the current game – only 3.3 yards per carry in the game against Utah to stay out of long distance and distance situations. If I'm the BYU offensive coordinator, then I'm trying to get tight end Matt Bushman early and often sophomore Zack Wilson can spend a ton on his back. I like the direction the BYU program is heading under fourth-year coach Kalani Sitake. They can be one year away from winning their opponent and winning 9-10 games.
Pro Choice: Utah 28, BYU 20
No.1 Clemson Vs. Georgia Tech
When: 19:00, Thursday
Where: Memorial Stadium, Clemson, SC TV: ACC Network
Series: Georgia Tech Leads 51-31-2.
Distribution: Clemson of 37.
SUPER STATE OF THE WEEK: Clemson allowed 2.5 yards per carry last season, but needs to replace all four lanes and two of three links.
Joe says: That was fun super stats of the week for a later season, maybe, but Georgia Tech doesn't stand a chance here. Bad Tech News: They're also not returning any starters on the defensive line, and Clemson's offense will be one of the best this season with quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The only question seems to be how many points Clemson can score early. However, this game is not completely without intrigue. Yellow Jackets first-year coach Jeff Collins (previously at Temple) has not released a depth chart and his offense is a bit of a mystery. Obviously Tech manages a triple option with former coach Paul Johnson, but Collins is a pro-stylish offensive coach. Perhaps this rivalry will improve over the next few years. For now, Dabo will welcome Tech's new coach in the ACC with a bunch of outrage.
Joe's Choice: Clemson 55, Georgia Tech 10
Pro Says: The two teams are diverging in different directions. Last year, that line was only 16 and Clemson won by 28 points. We all know Clemson has Texas A&M on deck, but they have won and covered games before ranking opponents Auburn, Louisville, Miami and NC State for the past two years. It would be enough with a new head coach, but the Yellow Jackets also have a new breach system. There is no longer a triple option and the remaining talent is not in line with the new distribution scheme. They also have a new starting QB, a new backfield, and perhaps the worst wide receiver in FBS. The line is very high, but I do not support flea dogs.
Pro Choice: Clemson 56, Georgia Tech 10
No.3 Georgia at Vanderbilt
When: 18:30, Sat.
Where: Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, Tenn.
TV: SEC Network
Series: Georgia leads 57-20-2.
Distribution: Georgia to 21.
SUPER STATE OF THE WEEK: Georgia enters this season losing championship games to maintain back-to-back attacks in Alabama in a season. Here you are, Alabama 2019 backup QB Mac Jones.
Joe says: Mark Richt won the SEC in his second season, then again in his fourth. I'm just saying, people! Kirby Smart is entering her fourth year at Georgia after winning the SEC in her second year, so we know what that means. The pressure is mounting in Athens for the national championship. Georgia has been selected by many this season to win all of this, and for good reason. Kirby was a maniac and spent the money to prove it. From 2016-18, Georgia has $ 1.5 million more in recruitment than any other Power 5 program, according to a recent report. Sometimes annoying Vanderbilt shouldn't be a big deal, right? The first games against conference enemies are always weird. If Wandy goes back Kewn Shawn Vaughn (1,244 yards in 2018) can tie first downs, then Dores can hang around for a while.
Joe's Choice: Georgia 33, Vanderbilt 17
Pro Says: In last year's game, the Bulldogs had a total of 560 yards and gained 28 points. It was such a blow that Jake Fromm exposed the fourth quarter. Am I a little concerned about Georgia's inexperienced wide receiver position and new offensive coordinator at James Carley? I'm sure, but the Dores have a new offensive coordinator and can't decide on a starting QB between transferring Riley Neal's Ball State and holding Deuce Wallace. "The Dores are also not good at protecting home turf, moving just 1-5 against the spread as a domestic dog over the last two seasons. If that's not enough, the Bulldogs have one of the best special teams in the country, while the best part of the Dorres special teams is the kick that converts only 13 of 22 field goal attempts.
Choosing Pro: Georgia 45, Vanderbilt 14
Ole Miss in Memphis
When: 11am, Sat.
Where: Bowl Liwl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tn.
Series: Ole Miss leads 47-11-2.
Distribution: Memphis 5.5.
SUPER STATE OF THE WEEK: Memphis is 0 -4 against UCF the past two seasons. Joe says:
Joe says: Let's start from here: Memphis needs to win AAC this season and put coach Mike Norwell in a position to switch to the Power 5. Obviously a start early in the season against an SEC opponent would helped for that reason. The Tigers were 5-1 against home runs last season, and Memphis upset 10-point favorite Ole Miss for the last time regional rivals played in the Liberty Cup (2015). Ole Miss was No. 13 in the country that year, and third-year coach Matt Luke is just trying to break even this season. Memphis QB Brady White is a veteran starter, but let's see what he can do without offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham. White is a rare sixth-grader by NCAA standards, but that's how long most Memphis kids need to graduate. We children, because we love. Dilly Dilly!
Joe chose: Memphis 35, Ole Miss 21
Pro says: Both teams break new coordinators so that each team can be in the running. I like that Ole Miss is doing a little better as Rich Rodriguez and Mike McIntyre have experience in the coaching team. Memphis has a total of seven new coaches. The Memphis offense will be explosive behind quarterback Brady White, who had 26 passes last year. I just can't trust a defense that gave up 25 games to 40 yards or more and allowed Missouri to score 65 points and UCF score 56 with a backup QB. I'll take the team from the better conference and players with better genealogy.
Pro Choice: Ole Miss 38, Memphis 34
South Carolina vs UNC
When: 14:30, Sat.
Where: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte
Series: UNC leads 34-19-4.
Distribution: South Carolina by 10.
SUPER ARTICLE OF THE WEEK: South Carolina has the most difficult schedule in the country this season with games against the top three teams in the nation: No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia.
Joe says: I'm thinking about a new license plate for Palma: South Carolina, it's for sadists. What a brutal schedule. Gamecocks just need to learn to love the pain. Led by first-year coach Mac Brown, North Carolina is a bad team. If South Carolina loses this game, then Will Muschamp really has to spend some time on Sunday trying to remember his LinkedIn password. (Because who can remember things like that in a time of crisis?) North Carolina has not covered the spread of neutrals since 2010, and the Tar Heels were 0-6 ATS on the road last season. The Gamecocks return Old Man Bentley to attack plus the full odor of the Belk Bowl's elimination from Virginia. In addition to the cup game, South Carolina lost a lot of close games in 2018. In other words, there is hope for this season. And may Muschamp really have to beat Kentucky at home to keep his address in South Carolina. Random Thought: What if Urban Meyer went to USC that no one expected?
Joe's Choice: South Carolina 31, North Carolina 14
Pro Says: I hear the Gamecocks are motivated after a 28-0 loss of shutout for Virginia in a bowl game. I personally think it was a departure. They scored 31 at strong Florida defense and 35 at Clemson last season. Look for the Gamecocks with the backs of Rico Dowdall and Tavien Foster (Clemson transfer) to find a lot of tackles that allowed five yards a carry last season. The Tarheels have a new offensive coordinator (Phil Longo) from Ole Miss and a true freshman (Sam Howell). Do not be surprised if the total number of game delays, illegal procedures and penalties is 10 or more combined. The Tar Heels have also made money 3-7-1 in the neutral games site over the last decade. Sometimes you have to put it on to play it.
Pro Choice: South Carolina 37, North Carolina 20
Houston at No.4 Oklahoma
When: 6:30 PM, Sun.
Where: Memorial Stadium, Norman, Okla.
Series: Oklahoma Water 2-1.
Distribution: Oklahoma on May 23rd.
SUPER STATE OF THE WEEK: Dana Holgorsen earns $ 4 million a season for Coach Houston. This is not really a statistic. It just seems crazy to me to coach a group of 5. Last year, he would have been ranked 24th in the country, which is statistics.
Joe says: Houston last beat the team in 4th place in 1979, but these cougars have taken a few steps back since Tom Herman reactivated the program. However, the cabinet is not a goal for new coach Dana Holgorsen (West Virginia). There are eight returning chiefs of insult, so this one can be upset. Let's not forget how historically poor defense of the OU was last season. The good news: It can't be worse with eight starts. Jalan Herts is the third quarterback to start the year in consecutive years, and, of course, the last two have won the Heisman trophy (Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray). Still, there is some mystery to this start for the Hurts, and especially after saving Alabama in the SEC Championship game. I have no doubt about Helen.
Joe's Choice: Oklahoma 56, Houston 28
Pro Says: I think OU's offense could be special with Alabama transfer quarterback Jalen Herts and running back Kennedy Brooks and Trey . I'm just not ready to bet on three compensations against a team that has a coach (Dana Holgorsen) who has coached against Oklahoma the past eight seasons and has scored a combined 87 points in the last two games. Houston has a quarterback in D & # 39; Eriq King, who threw for 36 touchdowns last year in just 10 games. OU also has many defensive issues after giving up 33.3 points per game last season and already losing one of its first two errors in fall camp. Give me points in what a barn burner should be.
Pro Choice: Oklahoma 48, Houston 34
No.2 Alabama vs. Duke
When: 2:36 PM, Sat.
Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta TV: ABC
Series: Alabama leads 3-1.
Distribution: Alabama of 35.
SUPER STATUS OF THE WEEK: Alabama is 9-0 continuously in season-opening neutral pitches. The Tide last lost the season opener in 2001.
Joe says: Alabama will start three true freshmen against Duke. Sounds like a basketball game. All freshmen are on the defensive, making this incredible number unprecedented for Alabama. Most preseason tackles D.J. Dale would have garnered a huge amount of attention to start as a true freshman. Darren Payne did not, as did Quinn Williams. Dale, however, was overshadowed by midline injuries and deep promotions in freshman charts by Christian Harris and Shane Lee. Concern is about the road, but probably not against the Duke.
Joe's Choice: Alabama 45, Duke 21
Pro says: Nick Saban may have had many sleepless nights after his team lost the national championship 44-16 to Clemson. Also for the first time, he seems really upset as many of his coaches jump ship. The two injured Alabama starter battleships are great for games on the road, but not here. Duke has a huge offensive line that costs an average of almost 310 pounds per person, but I doubt they can handle Tide's complex blitz schemes. They gave up 30 sacks last season and four of Clemson's and Virginia Tech's best defensive linemen.
No.16 Auburn vs. No.11 Oregon
Кога: 18:30, Sat.
Къде: AT&T Stadium, Арлингтън, Тексас TV: ABC
Auburn 24, Oregon 20
Oregon 27, Auburn 23
