The hit show “Bridgerton” is officially the most watched original series on Netflix in the history of the company.
The show, based on Julia Quinn’s book of the same name, surpassed even its own pink predictions of the streaming service in its first season, winning 82 million views, Deadline reported on Wednesday.
Bridgerton depicts the life of the upper class in Regency England, giving a subversive view of the period with a Dalton casting and a storyline that focuses heavily on women’s lives.
The series was released on December 25 on Netflix and was described by GQ magazine as a combination of “Gossip Girl” and “Downton Abbey”
“I think the show really offers an incredible escape for the audience at a time when that’s exactly what is needed,” said director Chris Van Dussen.
“Bridgerton” is this lavish, lively, grim love story of Regency; it is about romance, love and joy; I think all these things are really universal topics that people answer. “
Netflix sent a thank-you note to fans of the show on Wednesday, thanking them for making “Bridgerton” a hit.
Reggae-Jean Page, who plays the Duke of Hastings, also posted a photo with the entire cast and crew, thanking the fans for their love and support.
Last week, Netflix announced that Bridgerton would return for a second season and focus on Bridgerton’s older child, Anthony, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey.
It remains unclear how many of the show’s season a cast will return.
