Music legend Ronnie Spector remembers her ex-husband Phil Spector after the news of the death of the 81-year-old music producer from COVID-19 while he was serving a prison sentence for the 2003 murder of Lana Clarkson.
On her Instagram page, the singer, who became famous with the singing group “Roneti”, posted a photo of herself with Spector in the recording studio, along with a long caption that describes in detail the meteoric rise and the final collapse of the former couple.
“It’s a sad day for music and a sad day for me,” the 77-year-old star wrote. “When I worked with Phil Spector, I watched him work in the recording studio, I knew I was working with the best. He had complete control, guided everyone. To love so much in those days. Meeting him and falling in love was like a fairy tale. The magic music we managed to make together was inspired by our love. I loved him madly and gave him my heart and soul. ”
She also hinted at the “darkness” of their relationship. Ronnie, who was married to Spector from 1968 to 1974, had previously accused her ex of threatening behavior, including pulling a gun on her and forcing her to sign a divorce agreement, which she reportedly took away from her future income.
“As I said many times while he was alive, he was a brilliant producer but a disgusting husband. “Unfortunately, Phil could not live and function outside the recording studio,” said Ronnie. “It was dark, many lives were damaged. I still smile when I hear the music we made together, and I always will. The music will be forever. Phil Spector 1939-2021.
She was not the only musical legend to share her memories of Spector. Darlene Love, who has also worked with the producer on several hit songs, described her abuse of Spector.
“You know, it was all like a bad marriage,” Love said Diversity. “This is a marriage that was violent – not only physically but also mentally. That’s what Phil was trying to do to me. He wanted to control not Darlene, but talent. “
But she also attributes his role in the music industry.
“I felt it was very sad,” added Love. “I did not think about hatred. I didn’t think, “He deserved it or it had to happen.” I just felt it was a sad way for him to leave this land. The more I thought about it, the sadder I became. He changed the sound of rock and roll – the reason I know this is that Steve Van Zand, Bruce Springsteen and Elton John told me. “
In Spector’s later years, the producer became even more involved. He was convicted of the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson at his Los Angeles mansion and was sentenced to 19 years in prison after a trial that ended in 2009. Spector claims Clarkson’s death was “accidental suicide”.
Following the news of Spector’s death, Clarkson’s mother, Donna Clarkson, made a note of the loss of her daughter’s life.
“Lana Clarkson was a warm, compassionate, kind, loving woman who would now be 58 years old. Her energy, brightness and love of life have sustained her family since her murder 18 years ago in 2003, “she said in a statement Sunday.
Several other people turned to social media to remember Clarkson’s memory, including CNN’s anchor Jake Tapper, who posted a photo of Clarkson in happier times. “That’s literally all I have to say about Spector and his ‘legacy,'” Tapper said.
Several other people honored Clarkson’s memory in publications.
