Britney Spears dethroned Justin Timberlake in a popular meme to begin in May.
Every year, social media bakes Timberlake by posting a viral meme inspired by the 2000 album “This Will Be Me.”
But on Friday, the Twitter account @CrappyFumes wrote on Twitter, “I did this to replace the stupid meme ‘it will be May’ – a welcome world.” The new meme features Spears from her 2004 music video, Oops I Did It Again, quoting her lyrics, “It’s So Typical of Me,” replacing the last word with “May.” The tweet was shared more than 6,000 times and received 21,000 likes.
Another Twitter user posted another Spears meme on Twitter that read, “My Loneliness Kills May,” forging a text from Spears’ 1998 song “Baby One More Time.”
In February, Timberlake, 40, apologized to his ex-girlfriend for ill-treatment after their breakup in 2002, which he spoke of in a misogynistic manner on a radio show. Calls for Timberlake to apologize grew with the broadcast of New York Times /FX documentary Shaping Britney Spears, which paints a sobering picture of how Spears, 39, is objectified in the media.
“I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments and concerns and I want to respond,” Timberlake wrote on Instagram. “I deeply regret the moments in my life when my actions contributed to the problem, when I spoke in turn or did not declare what was right. I understand that I failed in these moments and in many others and took advantage of the system which justifies misogyny and racism. ”
Timberlake’s apology extended to Janet Jackson for his participation in the joint performance of the 2004 Super Bowl halftime, during which he pulled off her bust with the intention of revealing her red bra (planned trick), but accidentally exposed her breasts. While Timberlake has apologized to Jackson in the past, there have been significant career implications for the Escapade singer.
On Saturday, Timberlake honored the creator of the original meme, whose name is Kiana Davis. “Now that he insists, I have to give props where it’s due,” he wrote in his Instagram stories. “Look what you started.”
Davis told Yahoo Entertainment about the updated meme: “I’m also a big Britney fan, so I love that there’s a version for her too. All the love here!”
