BYU’s run for the unbeaten season deflected on Friday night as quarterback Zack Wilson continued his prolific youth season, throwing 400 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-26 win in Houston ̵

1; a win that required a comeback in the second half. Playing only his second game of the season, Houston led 26-14 at the end of the third quarter before BYU scored four unanswered touchdowns to close the game and improve to 5-0.

The victory was critical of BYU’s national profile, as the independent program struggled to pick up a full schedule this season after six games against SEC, Big Ten and Pac-12 enemies were wiped out of their original schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The games against Navy, Houston, Boise State and San Diego State topped BYU’s revised schedule and are now 2-0 against teams in this group.

Wilson and his favorite target, Dax Milne, are largely grateful that BYU survived a playful effort by Houston on Friday. A week after making five turnovers in a 49-31 win to open the season against Tulane, Houston made no turnovers against the Green Wave, but a series of errors by special teams chased the cougars against BY.

BYU recovered a surprising side kick after scoring 26-21 in the final minute of the third quarter. BYU did not score in the subsequent possession, but the side kick helped reverse the position of the field as Houston began their next possession, anchored deep again. BYU got a stop and Houston’s Laine Wilkins hit just 13 yards out to establish BYU’s continued play when passing the shovel from Wilson to Masen Wake with 10:35 in the game.

It was Wilson’s only pass of the night that didn’t go to Milne, finishing with nine catches for 184 yards and three touchdowns, including an 18-yard catch to leave with 3:06 left BYU for 36-26 with 3:06 left. and seal the result.

Wilson is now 107 of 136 assists for 1,641 yards, 12 touchdowns and just one interception in five games. Milne came in with 24 teams with a high team, but only one touchdown. He is now the team leader with four.

BYU hosts Texas and Western Kentucky ahead of a November 6 Boys hearing. Houston will play in the Navy next week as he looks set to regroup and compete for the league title in what appears to be a wide-open AAC.
