Canadian authorities warn drivers not to allow moose to lick their cars

Yes, you read that right.

Officials in Jasper, an alpine town in Canada’s Alberta province, have put up signs asking drivers to avoid allowing moose to lick salt.

“They’re obsessed with salt, that’s one of the things they need for the minerals in their body,” Jasper National Park spokesman Steve Young told CNN. “They usually get it from salt lakes in the park, but now they realize they can also get road salt that sprays on cars.”

In Jasper National Park, where people often park on the side of the road hoping to catch a moose, letting animals near your car is actually a serious danger.

By allowing moose to lick the salt from your car, they will get used to being around. This poses a risk to both animals and drivers who may accidentally bump into them.

“Moose and cars are not a good combination. If you hit a moose with your car, you take your feet out of it and it goes through your windshield,” Young said.

The best way to stop moose from approaching your car is to simply move away when you see them approaching, he added.

Another important warning Young people and other employees continue to stress the importance of staying in your car and avoiding any interactions with wildlife, including moose.

While other animals usually run away when people approach, the moose will stand on the ground and pounce if it feels threatened.

“We’ve seen a lot more moose lately. The wolf population is declining, which means there are fewer predators, and as a result, the moose population is growing,” Young said. “It also means that people have to be respectful and give them space.”

Visitors are not allowed to feed, lure or disturb wildlife in national parks, and violators could face fines of up to $ 25,000, he added.
