The $ 200 million live epic went straight to Disney + in the United States and other select territories amid the ongoing pandemic.
At Disney Mulan flawed in its debut at the Chinese box office with a daunting $ 23.2 million.
The $ 200 million tent was made with both Chinese and American audiences.
Directed by Niki Caro, the live adaptation of the classic animated title titled popular Chinese-born actress Liu Yifei as a young woman disguised as a man to fight in the Imperial Army. Mulan starred in numerous movie icons in China, including Gong Li, Jet Li, Donnie Yen and others.

In Friday, Mulan received particularly poor social results in Alibaba’s leading Chinese ticket apps, Maoyan and Taopiaopiao, in predicting the film’s weekend start. After all, Disney’s global vision of history, based on an ancient Chinese fable, doesn’t seem to resonate with moviegoers in that country.
The filming of the Disney event was originally set to hit theaters around the world in late March, but these plans were made when the new coronavirus struck, forcing mass closures of cinemas.
Disney postponed the release date several times before finally deciding to send Mulan straight to Disney + at a premium price in the US and other select markets. In other territories, such as China and Russia, Mulan receives a traditional theatrical edition.
At the end of last year, Mulan became the subject of controversy after Liu expressed his support for the Hong Kong police, who were then in the midst of a brutal crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in the city. Her comments provoked a heated online reaction under the hashtag #BoycottMulan. The online campaign has resumed in recent weeks.
Also in recent days, viewers watching the film have noticed “special thanks” to the film’s credits to various government agencies in Xinjiang, Provence, where China has been accused of gross human rights abuses against its Muslim Uighur minority. (Approximately a minute of the film was shot in this Provence.)
In response to last week’s uproar, Walt Disney Co.’s chief financial officer. Christine McCarthy said while Mulan was shot almost entirely in New Zealand, landscapes were shot in 20 locations in China or in order to capture the unique landscape of that country. She said it was common practice in the industry to “recognize in the film’s credits the national and local governments that have allowed you to shoot there.”
All said Mulan has played on the big screen so far in 17 markets, earning $ 37.6 million so far.
The company has not released a single viewer of those who pay $ 29.99 to watch Caro’s Disney + movie, although McCarthy told investors she was “very pleased with what we saw over the four-day weekend.”
