CDC Warns of "Super" Salmonella in Beef, Cheese

THURSDAY, August 22, 2019 (HealthDay News) – Salmonella-resistant antibiotic-resistant strains are sick people who eat contaminated beef and unpasteurized soft Mexican cheese, health officials warned Thursday.

First observed in 2017, this bacterial strain has already caused 255 Americans in 32 states to become ill and many more are expected.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified the source of contaminated beef from American sources and soft Mexican cheese, suggesting

"Resistant strains developed in animals and these strains can be transmitted to humans," lead researcher Dr. Ian Plumb, CDC medical epidemiologist.

Giving many antibiotics to livestock and humans is why antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria develop.

"I think the use of antibiotics in cattle can affect people," Plumb said. Careful use of antibiotics in farm animals and humans is the only way to limit the antibiotic bacteria that develop.

This last strain of Salmonella is resistant to two commonly prescribed antibiotics, namely azithromycin and ciprofloxacin, found CDC

Among 255 patients, 60 were hospitalized and two died, says Plumb.

For most people, salmonella causes attacks of diarrhea that can last for several days but do not require antibiotics, said Plumb. However, for some, especially those with chronic medical conditions, salmonella can become serious and require hospitalization.

Many more cases of Salmonella caused by this strain are likely to have occurred and have not been reported, Plumb said. He also expects the number of cases to increase.

"We underestimate the number of Salmonella infections out there, and it is possible that there have been many more cases that have for some reason not led to local public health departments and we expect that," he said.

Plumb said The CDC is unable to perfect some specific brands of beef, but the agency suspects that this strain of salmonella will continue to spread to cattle.
