Charles Rogers, a former MSU and Detroit Lions successor, dies at 38

Rogers is the state leader in Michigan all-time in touchdown catches by 27 and he ranks third in school history with 2,281 yards receiving. He won the Biletnikoff Award in 2002, which is awarded to college football's best receiver after catching 68 passes for 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior.

"Charles Rogers was a talented young man," Spartan wide receivers coach Don Treadwell said in a statement. "He had the overall package as a premier wide receiver in size, speed and range, covered in great racing spirit, but still humble off the field. It was a privilege to train him. He is a great Spartan warrior who will be deeply missed." [1

9659002] Selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, Rogers never realized his full potential as he struggled with injuries and drug abuse during his short stint in the NFL.

Until 2006, Rogers was interrupted by the Lions and never played in the NFL again.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Charles Rogers. From Saginaw, in East Lansing, to Detroit, Charles's relationship with the state of Michigan and his football community has been felt by many throughout his life. We offer our heartfelt condolences and condolences to his friends and family at this difficult time, "the Detroit Lions said in a statement.
