Illinois officials are urging residents to carefully check themselves and their children for ticks after spending time in wooded areas this spring.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has announced that May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Ticks carry Lyme and other debilitating and sometimes fatal diseases such as Rocky Mountain fever, Tularemia, Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis.
Removing ticks by 24 hours reduces the risk of disease. Instructions for removing ticks and reporting symptoms are available on the IDPH website.
Tic populations in your area can be monitored in the IDPH Tick Surveillance Mapping application.
