The leadership position in House GOP becomes a test for the former President Trumpis in the hands of the conference and the Republican Party.
Trump’s allies are seeking to remove Cheney from her role as Speaker of the Republican Conference of the House of Representatives over her vote last week to impeach the president to incite a mob to attack the Capitol.

The best aide to the Republican Congress resigns, tearing up Republican lawmakers who opposed Biden’s victory MORE (R-Fla.), A fierce critic of Cheney and one of Trump’s most vocal defenders, said her position at the helm of GOP communications was “problematic” for Trump’s base.
“I think it’s problematic for the future of the Republican Party,” Gatz told The Hill. “Liz Cheney is a vision of the Republican Party that gives no energy to anyone outside Washington, D.C., Beltoua.”
A number of prominent conservatives who chose not to join Cheney in the impeachment nevertheless supported her, creating an internal struggle in the parliament for her future.
Cheney’s removal from the leadership will require a high threshold at which a two-thirds majority of the conference will have to agree to a vote as a step in a complex process. Yet this also portends a difficult primary for Cheney, who is likely to be targeted by Trump in 2022.
If Cheney survives, it will be a great victory for her – and a significant loss for Trump, probably signaling a weakening of his power over GOP policy.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump earlier this month, and she was one of the few Republican lawmakers to criticize the former president during his term, often rejecting key proposals for foreign policy and from time to time evoked his rhetoric.
Trump will regularly return fire, saying on Jan. 6, just before the deadly siege of the Capitol, that “we must get rid of the weak congressmen, those who are not good at all, Liz Chainis of the World.”
If Cheney is able to retain her leadership position, her opponents, including Trump, can still come after her by supporting their main contender in this election cycle.
Wyoming Sen. Anthony Bouchard (R) has announced after the impeachment vote that he will do so. challenge her in 2022
Cheney rejected the main contender in 2018, winning 68 percent of the vote. Trump won Wyoming last year by almost 44 percentage points.
“It could be a belfry,” said a GOP member, referring to Cheney’s re-election candidacy. “I do not know how it will develop. I mean, it’s still too early. “
The MP said that despite private complaints with Trump among many Republicans in Washington, the former president remains popular in many of their areas.
“I think there are a lot of people at home – when you look at the poll and look at the intensity – people still hear strong support for the president from their base. But when you’re here, most of my colleagues here are disgusted by the way the president has behaved, “he said, quoting Trump’s attitude toward the former vice president. Soon Survey morning consultation found that 79 percent of Republican voters approved of Trump despite the siege of the Capitol.
The lawmaker went on to say that while much of the “party is perceived as pro-Trump,” others in the GOP make a difference and “see themselves as Republicans.”
“Over time, this may move more in Liz’s favor,” he added.
Cheney’s allies note that Trump’s harassment pulpit has weakened since major social media platforms such as Twitter banned it after the Capitol uprising, which killed five people, including a Capitol police officer.
But even without access to Twitter or Facebook, some members say Trump will find a way to stay relevant and influential.
“You will not keep Donald Trump for very long. … He will find a way to communicate, especially with his loyal supporters across the country, “said one MP.
Another MP said that Trump’s influence is here to stay.
“There are Republican voters all over America,” he said. “And for them, Trump’s program remains very popular [they] don’t see this change for life. “
Freedom Caucus chairman Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) And first term Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.) Is leading the charge of ousting Cheney, with two sources close to the effort saying they have more than 115 Republicans who say they will do so vote for a resolution asking her to step down from leadership.
Cheney supporters have warned that the ouster of Congress’s top CSO woman could be detrimental to winning swings next year and give Democrats something to take advantage of as they seek to defend their thin as razor majority in the middle.
“2020 was the year of the Republican woman. And how do Republican leaders repay these women? By allowing the Freedom Association to kick a woman out of the curb leadership to do what she thinks is right, “said a senior assistant Republican woman.
“If McCarthy allows this to happen, it simply shows that he has just been completely castrated by the Freedom Association. And this is the fastest way to ensure that he absolutely does not receive the hammer on January 3, 2023, “she said, referring to the leader of the Minority House. Critics say Cheney gave the Democrats a boost when he spoke out against Election College challenges and announced his impeachment position before the vote. Two Republican lawmakers said the move was tantamount to throwing most of the conference “under the bus.”
Cheney rejected her calls to resign.
“I expect and am confident that we will be united as a conference going forward. “We realize how important it is to make sure we stand up and fight the policies of the Biden administration, policies that we know will be very harmful to the country,” she told Fox News on Thursday.
