Chicago White Sox named Tony La Rusa, 76, new manager

Tony La Rusa, 76, a three-time World Series champion, is the new manager of the Chicago White Sox, the team announced on Thursday.

La Rusa has not served as a major league manager since finishing a 16-year game with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, a season that ended with La Rusa’s third league. La Rusa, who has 2728-2365 managerial experience, became the first manager in the history of the major leagues to retire after winning the World Series this season.

La Rousse began his managerial career with the White Sox from 1979 to 1986. White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf bought the team three years later and fired 64 games for La Rousse in the 1986 season, after which he watched him join the Auckland Athletics on Later that season, to begin, which eventually turned into a career in the Hall of Fame. Reinsdorf has long regretted this decision.

After competing with the Cardinals, La Rusa took on executive roles in the baseball of Major League, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels, who hired him as a senior advisor on baseball operations after the 201

9 season.

La Rusa takes over the role of former White Sox manager Rick Renteria, with whom the organization agreed to split on October 12. Renteria steered the White Sox to a 35-25 record in 2020 and the franchise’s first appearance since the 2008 season. Chicago lost 2-1 to athletics in the wild card round.

At the time, general manager Rick Hahn said Renteria and the front office had been talking “for years” about how the “final stages” of the White Sox’s recovery would go. Khan also said the move was not accelerated by anything Renteria did in 2020, including a controversial move in the playoffs or a team that shook after having a slight lead in the division.

“This is not about any of the decision-making in Game 3 of the wild card series,” Hahn said at the time. “This is not about anything that has happened in the last few weeks since we took our place in the playoffs. It’s based on where we are as an organization and what we need to do to take the next step.”

Although Hahn would not shed any light on which team he was interested in as he embarked on his search, he shared the type of man the team was looking for.

“Ultimately, I think the best candidate or the ideal candidate will be someone who has experience with organizing the championship in recent years; experience in October with organizing the championship,” he said.

Although La Russa has not been in the dugout since 2011, he was with the Red Sox as vice president and special assistant to Dave Dombrowski, then president of the baseball team when Boston won the 2018 World Series.
