A mass vaccination site in Commerce City, Colorado, shut down Wednesday after nearly a dozen people reported side effects after being photographed with COVID-19.
At least 11 people who received an injection of Johnson & Johnson at Dick City Sports Park said they experienced nausea and dizziness minutes after the sting.
The medical staff found that two people needed additional monitoring and were taken to nearby hospitals for additional care. The other nine who fell ill received juice and water before being cleared to return home.
Public health officials quickly reassured the public that there was no cause for further concern for other people who had been vaccinated the same day. The decision to suspend operations at the site was taken due to a great deal of caution, city officials said.
“We know it can be alarming to hear about people being transported to the hospital, and we want to reassure Colorado residents that the CDC and public health are constantly monitoring all permitted vaccines,”
A spokesman for Centura Health, which administers the Colorado vaccination site, said the number of people who became ill was less than 1 percent of the 1,700 patients who received pictures that day.
The site has used the Johnson & Johnson vaccine before and problems are rare. The Federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System reports that there have been 10 previously documented reactions at community vaccination sites.
