Dr Anthony Fauci said during Friday’s segment of Fox News’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto” that he was “completely out of context” when discussing the possibility of wearing face masks until 2022.
Fauci said “let’s get serious” when asked by host Neil Cavuto about some of the criticism he received after commenting in a February interview on CNN’s The State of the Union. Cavuto began by noting Dr. Hopkins̵
“Well, first of all, let me answer one thing that this man says is just completely incomprehensible,” Fauci replied. “He says that when I talk about herd immunity, I only consider people who have been vaccinated. This is completely wrong. “
He went on to say that herd immunity is an “illusory concept” because we do not know the percentage of people who have already been infected and are likely to be protected from the virus, in addition to the people who have been vaccinated. He added that the larger this combined group of people, the closer we get to the “community blanket”.
“As far as caution is concerned, we want to make sure that when we make recommendations, we do so on the basis of science,” he continued. “You can say that something is likely to be true. If you are vaccinated, you will probably not spread the infection if you become infected without any symptoms. There is no doubt about that. I understand that, as does everyone else. “
He then said that once studies come out that show that this is the case, then people can benefit from wearing masks if they are vaccinated. He added that he wanted to be conservative and wait until they received the evidence.
“But wearing masks in 2022, Doctor?” Are you still standing on it? Kavuto jumped.
“Come on, let’s get serious about this. This was completely out of context. What I was saying – “Fautsi answered before Cavuto jumped again, asking:” Don’t you think that’s right? Don’t you think you should have masks in 2022? “
“We do not know. I’m not saying we will. “If we get a big jump and we continue to increase the number of cases, we may have to wear masks in 2022,” Fauci said. “If we continue to vaccinate people and get the vast majority of people, along with those who have been infected and the level of infection is declining, it will most likely not be necessary.
“We are playing this game here. You take a word or sentence that someone says and throw gat-ye at them. No, I did not say categorically that we will undoubtedly wear masks in 2022. I said under certain circumstances, which may be necessary. But there are circumstances in which we may not have to, “he concluded.
