The UFC offered Connor McGregor a fight against Dustin Poirier on January 23, 2021 – and according to UFC President Dana White, that’s the date. Take it or leave it.
The promotion officially offered McGregor the fight against Poirier on January 23 at the end of last month, shortly after McGregor offered a charity show match against Poirier in December. Last week, McGregor announced on social media that he had “accepted” the UFC’s offer, but said the fight should take place on one of the payouts to watch on November 21 or December 12 at the UFC.
UFC 255 on November 21 has reserved two title fights, as well as UFC 256 on December 12. White said he did not want to rearrange the schedule to meet McGregor̵
“We offered him a fight, we arranged his own meeting,” White told ESPN. “We didn’t have a date this year. We have everything for this year, as the world champions are fighting for titles. He wants to fight Dustin Poirier obviously, so we went to [broadcast partner] ESPN and gave him his own meeting. On January 23, he was offered Dustin Porier.
This is a “yes” or “no” answer.
White said he did not know why McGregor was adamant that he should fight before January 23. “I have no idea,” White said.
UFC 255 includes a men’s title fight in the men’s category between Davison Figueiredo and Alex Perez and a women’s title fight in the women’s category between Valentina Shevchenko and Jennifer Maya. UFC 256 will include doubleweight champion Amanda Nunes defending her light heavyweight title against Megan Anderson and light heavyweight champion Peter Jan against Aljamain Sterling.
Asked if there was any chance the UFC could move some of these fights to meet McGregor’s schedule, White said the company could not.
“It doesn’t happen,” White said. “We exhibited this year. He was retired. Does anyone disagree that he is retired? During this crazy pandemic year we are going through, we have faced many challenges. We have done many things to make this thing work. We have done so “We set out our schedule. The fighters engaged with him. The fighters started training for these battles. Connor came back and wanted to fight Dustin, so we went out and made his own meeting. It’s January 23.”
One twist in all this is that McGregor has shown interest in boxing Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao and even recently confirmed on social media that he is interested in facing Poirier, as Poirier is a southern paw (like Pacquiao) with good boxing skills.
For his part, White said he had no idea what was happening to a potential boxing match between McGregor and Pacquiao.
